I somewhat prefer Manchester because IMHO the natural scenery is nicer and the hotels are better (Equinox - resort type, or Wilburton Inn or 1811 House for fireplace rooms). For Maine at this time of year, probably Kennebunkport (White Barn Inn) is the best.įrom Chatham, Manchester, VT or Woodstock, VT are both very nice and both about a 5-hour drive. Bar Harbor, ME beats Boothbay or Kennebunkport, but it is very far and probably quite cold in the winter. If you're set on the seacoast, Chatham, MA (Chatham Bars Inn or Wequassett Inn) is a very nice, quaint town. However, this year, there's been a fair amount of snow - even in NY! That might factor into your thoughts. In the past few years, snow has been sparse, particularly in southern New England, but even in VT. One thing you probably want to see is snow. Both very easy airports to deal with.Īs a transplanted Houstonian, now in NYC, I LOVE New England.

If possible, try and fly into Manchester NH or Burlington Vt.

The Sunapee area of New Hampshire is very scenic, with a ski area and a beautiful lake nearby, and is close to Hanover NH with all the great restaurants and shops that this college town has to offer. Another very nice place is the Inn at Sunapee in Sunapee NH. The Marshland Farm at Queechee is a nice, medium sized country inn and restaurant a few miles outside Woodstock that offers cross country skiing and snowshoeing on premises. As for places in Vermont - Woodstock is quite charming (touristy by local standards, but still nice), and surrounded by some very beautiful countryside. While Stowe is best known for being a winter resort village, it really is incredible year-round and is a prime destination for viewing the vibrant colours of the famous New England fall. I would not go to Bar Harbor - this is a long drive, even in good weather. Nestled in a valley, surrounded by Vermont’s Green Mountains is one of the most beautiful towns in New England Stowe. If you do want to see the coast, I would recommend Portsmouth NH since there will be things open there, and it's an easy drive to the beaches of NH and southern Maine. The seacoast is quite barren this time of year, and the drive could be tricky, especially if you are not used to winter driving. I would seriously consider dropping the drive to the coast from Vermont if you are coming in December.
